OUT! A Pop Up Exhibit featuring material from our LGBT+ Archives
Asheville has long been at the center of the LGBT+ rights movement.
Organizations like the Southern Appalachian Lesbian and Gay Alliance “SALGA” and “C.L.O.S.E.R” (community liaison organization for support education and reform) brought LGBT+ people living in Asheville and surrounding areas together for political action and community togetherness at the height of the AIDS crisis.
Join the Friends of the North Carolina Room, Blue Ridge Pride, ButchOUT, and others as we display archival material from the North Carolina Collection at Pack Memorial Library at Banks Ave. Bar for one short weekend in October.
These rare archival materials including photos, newspapers, and more, tell the story of Asheville’s Queer Community from about 1972-2002.
*Saturday Reception* Join us on Saturday from 2-5 pm for a special reception! Banks Ave. is donating some delicious small bites and the Asheville Gay Men’s Chorus will be there to perform!
This will be a great opportunity to meet the organizers and talk about how *YOU* can contribute to archiving LGBT+ history in Asheville and Buncombe County.

The Ravenscroft Reserve
Join the Friends of the North Carolina Room and four guests for an evening of learning and discussion about the area of the South Slope Neighborhood surrounding the former Ravenscroft School.
These four presentations will cover:
- The History of the Collier Woods and its connections to the Ravenscroft School, Thomas Wolfe and the North State Fitting School, until the demolition of Buxton Hill, with Dale Slusser, Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County
- The Automotive History of Coxe Ave. and its Surrounding Auto Businesses, with Heath Towson an avid amateur automotive historian.
- The Ecological Significance of the Majestic Trees on the 11 Collier Avenue Property, with Monty Wooton, consulting forester
- History of the Effort to Save the Collier Wood Since 2015 & A Glimpse Into a Vision for the Property, Inge and Imke Durre

Join the Friends of the North Carolina Room and photographer Benjamin Porter to learn about one of Asheville’s most important photographers of the 20th century, Herbert W. Pelton.
From baseball teams to family reunions Pelton documented Asheville and WNC through panoramic photos. Also be sure to drop by the library to check out our display of Pelton material in the display case outside the NC Room!
